Teachers Links to Persuasive Speech
The speech tab details in five activities information on how a teacher can present ‘Spoken Argument’ to a year 10 English class. The art of argument is a key facete of persuasive writing and speech and these activities open a way for teachers to teach this art to their students.
Teachers may use those activities as they are presented or adapt them to suit their own class or their own method of teaching. The level of these activities and the lessons that can be extracted from them are entirely dependent on the interest of the students. If students choose not to take on the ideas presented by these activities they may be moved through faster. However, if students display interest, these activities can be extended and created into assignments or larger activities. The activities/lessons are placed in an order of sequence for the functioning of the class. This by no means constricts exactly what has to be taught where.
Assessment for this Oratory method of argument can be provided in a simple way and a complex way. As such, individual marks for each question can be compiled by the teacher who takes these activities on. Furthermore, a complex method of assessment has been designed at the conclusion of this document. This is displayed within a marking rubric that can be used, or can be the basis for another teacher made rubric.
